2004 UEFA Champions League Final: AC Milan 3-3 Liverpool FC (2-3 on pens)

Liverpool win the 2005 UEFA Champions League in dramatic penalty shootout

Liverpool FC won the 2005 UEFA Champions League in dramatic fashion, defeating AC Milan 3-3 (2-3 on pens) in a penalty shootout.

The match was played at the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, and saw Liverpool come from behind three times to level the match. Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek was the hero of the night, saving two penalties in the shootout to secure the victory.

Liverpool had a dream start to the match, taking the lead after just 5 minutes through John Arne Riise. However, AC Milan hit back with two goals in quick succession from Hernan Crespo, giving the Italian side a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Liverpool equalized again in the second half through Steven Gerrard, but AC Milan regained the lead once more through Andriy Shevchenko. With just minutes remaining, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard scored a stunning goal to level the match at 3-3 and send the game into extra time.

Extra time failed to produce a winner, so the match went to a penalty shootout. Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek was the hero of the shootout, saving two penalties from AC Milan players to secure the victory for Liverpool.

The victory was Liverpool's fifth European Cup, and their first since 1984. It was also the first time that a team had come from behind three times to win a European Cup final.
